Honestly speaking, I didn’t laugh much, except for the crazy scenes on the boat related to the captain’s dinner. I had read a review before watching Triangle of Sadness that it was just funny from start to end. Personally, I expected the movie to be funnier. An adult will be able to better understand the message, but it doesn’t mean that they will necessarily like it. A teenager will not get the story or the humor. This is a movie that many will love, but I have a feeling that many will find it boring. How will this influence the lives of the survivors? Is the movie worth watching? A skill like being able to light a fire, however, turns all the more important. If you are stuck on an island, nobody cares about your money. What will happen now? Everything is about to change as the status of the different persons suddenly turn completely around. The trip on the ship comes to a sad end as pirates arrive and the ship sinks. There are many special characters on the ship, and the story makes fun of many of them (while they try to play their roles seriously). For example, the wife of the British arms dealer picks up a grenade that is about to explode, proud to see that it is one they have produced themselves. This could be a mixture of brilliant people, but they seem to be rather stupid in their own way. The other guests consist of a Russian oligarch, a British arms dealer, and a coterie of nefarious characters, all under the command of a Marx-quoting American captain. Unfortunately, the cruise doesn’t end up exactly as expected. Maybe this gives them the chance to finally fall in love for real. What can they do to take the relationship to the next level? They are invited to a luxurious cruise ship where they can share pictures on social media while enjoying their days. Is it right that the girl earns more than the boy? They fight over money, and it also seems to be an issue about which of them earns more than the other. In other words, it isn’t a big love story at all. It seems to be a relationship mostly built on the thought that it will gain both of them. Triangle of Sadness tells us the story of two models who live together. It reminds me a little bit of the Norwegian movie The Worst Person in the World which was nominated for an Oscar earlier this year. Additionally, actor Zlatko Burić, who plays a Russian fertilizer magnate in the film, beat out fellow contenders Paul Mescal and Eden Dambrin for Best Actor.Triangle of Sadness is not the typical Hollywood movie. Östlund, for his part, secured the Best Screenplay and Best Director honors, which he dedicated to costar Charlbi after her unfortunate sudden death just months after the film premiered in Cannes in May 2022. Including the top prize of Best European Film at last year’s 35th annual European Film Awards. The entire film, from beginning to end, is an evisceration of classism and “appearance as capital.”įollowing the success of The White Lotus, both critical and in the zeitgeist, it’s clear that audiences are hungry for more, looking not just to “eat the rich” but to completely devour them. As for the title, the triangle in question is actually a reference to the plastic surgery term used to describe the wrinkle that forms between the brows (often remedied with a poke or two of Botox). The film is a satire on wealth, class, and privilege. Just as the richest among us are settling into their massive super-yacht, unwinding in the Grecian sun, and summoning the staff every three seconds, a storm rolls in, raining on the parades of the 1 percent…and from there, chaos descends. Yaya (Dean) and Carl (Dickinson), a celebrity model couple, are invited to board a luxury cruise for the ultra rich alongside a Russian oligarch, an arms dealer, and other Bezosian characters. The French title for this film, Sans Filtre, translates to “without filter,” so that might shed *some* light on what’s going on here. And even before ever picking up a camera, he’d worked at various ski resorts in the Swiss Alps, so something tells us he’s well versed in the neuroses of the ultra rich. The film’s writer and director, Ruben Östlund, is a Swedish filmmaker who has received critical acclaim (and awards to match) for practically every film he’s ever made. Triangle of Sadness stars Woody Harrelson, Harris Dickinson, and Charlbi Dean in her final film role.
